Marudaiyaru Basin Division, Ariyalur

Ariyalur Division was formed on 01.04.1968 and renamed as Aiyyaru Basin Division, Ariyalur in effect from 01.02.1996 vide G.O.Ms. No. 46 PW (WR1) Department, Date: 19.01.1996 and G.O.Ms. No. 371 PW (WR1) Department, Date: 26.06.1997, and again renamed as Marudaiyaru Basin Division, Ariyalur was formed and functioning from 2005 with Head Quarters of Ariyalur to maintain the PWD Tanks and Anicuts in Ariyalur and Perambalur District Vide G.O.Ms. No.124 PW (W2) Department dated 17.05.2005, under the control of Middle Cauvery Basin Circle, Trichy of Trichy Region, Trichy. PWD Tanks and Anicuts in Ariyalur and Perambalur District and under the control of Middle Cauvery Basin Circle, Trichy in Trichy Region, Trichy.

Under the control of this Division, 3 – Sub Divisions having 3 – sections each are functioning with the following head quarters.

  1. Marudaiyaru Basin Sub Division, Ariyalur Sections at

    Irrigation Section-I, Ariyalur.
    Irrigation Section-II, Ariyalur.
    Irrigation Section, Sendurai.

  2. Marudaiyaru Basin Sub Division, Jayankondam Sections at

    Irrigation Section, Jayankondam
    Irrigation Section, Madanathur.
    Irrigation Section, Sudhamalli.

  3. Marudaiyaru Basin Sub Division, Perambalur Sections at

    Irrigation Section, Perambalur
    Irrigation Section, Chinnaru.
    Irrigation Section, Kunnam.

Non-System Tanks of 64 Nos, system tank of 5 Nos in Ariyalur District and 73 Nos of Non-System Tank in Perambalur District are under the maintenance and control of this Division. In addition to the above,Maintenance of Coleroon river Laft Bank from Mile 47/6 to 67/3, Ponnar Channel having a Ayacut of 4694 Acres and Siddhamalli Reservoir are also under the maintenance control of this division. This division is also a territorial Division, which played an important role to implement Government schemes in Tiruchirappalli, Ariyalur and Perambalur District.

Objectives:

This Department was intended primarily for the following purposes:

  1. To maintain and upkeep of structural and non-structural components of irrigation facilities.
  2. To develope new additional projects, structures etc., to augment potential sources for irrigation.
  3. To maintain and upkeep of water courses and drainage facilities.
  4. To identify, investigate, formulate and estimate feasible and viable irrigation projects so that there is always a shelf of projects to implement the policy, promises and the programmes of the Government to implementation of this department.

Success stories

Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project of Sidhamalli Reservoir in Kargudi Village of Udayarpalayam Taluk in Ariyalur District.

The Sudhamalli Reservoir is located at latitude of 11*04’10” N and longitude of 79*18’42” E near Kargudy village of Udaiyarpalyam Taluk in Ariyalur District. It is an earth dam of 5.05 km bund length with a maximum height of 7.20 m and a surplus Regulator with three vents of 11.00 x 4.75 m. The design flood discharge is 495 m3 / Sec. (17480 Cusecs). The Reservoir holds up a volume of 6.422 m. M3(226.80 M.Cft) of Water at FRL condition ( + 33.250 m (or) 109.09 FT). The Project was completed during the year 1989.

The Ayacut of Sudhamalli Reservoir is 5080.62 Acres. Total dry ayacut is 3901.60 Acres. Total Wet Ayacut is 1179.02 Acres. The cost of the estimate works out to Rs. 1452.51 Lakhs. Tamilnadu Government in GO. (Ms) No. 211 / PW(F.1) Dept / dated 22.08.2012 have accorded administrative sanction at a cost of Rs 14.53 Crore. for implementation of Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project.

In the year also upto end of September 2017 the water has stored up to 2.75 m (ie) capacity 55.823 Mcft, due to the South East monsoon. water was released to the Sripuranthan tank, Kovaithattai tank for Irrigation purposes and expecting the good rainfall for North East Monsoon the water level may be reached upto FRL 4.75 m with capacity of 226.28 Mcft.

Construction of Checkdam across Vilangudi odai in Vilangudi Village of Ariyalur Taluk and District.

The Check dam is aimed for stabilizing the Ayacut of 58.29 Acre (ie) 23.59 Ha benefited by way of percolation through the 24 Nos of surrounding agriculture wells The capacity of the check dam works out to 0.78 M.cft. The number of fillings is assumed to 3. Hence the annual storage is 2.34 Mcft It is provided to discharge the MFD 68.00 cumecs with in the effective length of 36 m

This is back ward area and most of the people’s occupation is mainly Agriculture. After implementing this scheme, It solves the drinking water problems in the surrounding area and it will also give irrigation facilities to more Ayacut, also it improves their living standards and make them to productive members of the society. After implementing the scheme the ground water will be recharge in the adjacent side for meeting the drinking water.

Construction of Checkdam across Kallar odai in Siruvalur Village of Ariyalur Taluk and District.

The Check dam is aimed for stabilizing the Ayacut of 68.50 Acre (ie) 27.73 Ha. benefited by way of percolation through the 8 Nos of open wells and 17 Bore wells situated. The capacity of the check dam works out to 0.65 M.cft. The number of fillings is assumed to 3. Hence the annual storage is 1.95 Mcft It is provided to discharge the MFD 107.00 cumecs with in the effective length of 35 m

This is back ward area and most of the people’s occupation is mainly Agriculture. After implementing this scheme, It solves the drinking water problems in the surrounding area and it will also give irrigation facilities to more ayacut, also it improves their living standards and make them to productive members of the society. After implementing the scheme the ground water will be recharge in the adjacent side for meeting the drinking water.
